Rename project #16
Comments
or "unstyle" :) |
Oops, wrong button |
Hmm... to be honest, this has started to provide more of a clean, basic style than an actual unstyled-like appearance. It probably makes sense to rename it something closer to its nature ("simple", "clean", "basic", "plain", etc.). At the moment I'm leaning towards something closer to "clean", "clear", "tidy" (e.g. "style-cleaner", "unclutter", etc.) Maybe I'll go with unclutter, which is reasonably close to the current unstyle, but more accurate. |
On the other hand, this merely strips a page of complex styling rules, and applies a basic style instead. This is not a guarantee of uncluttering, and in fact can make the page look more disorganized because it wasn't built using progressive enhancement principles. In fact, hinging on that notion, maybe the name could be something related to the similar philosophy of graceful degradation. "degrade" is a negatively connotated word, though, so perhaps a synonym would work better as a name -- "simplify", for example. Still, It would be necessary to qualify the simplification, i.e. what is being simplified. Not sure how to make that clear without using a two-word name... maybe downstyle? |
Yeah, after some more thinking, downstyle is definitely more accurate than both unstyle and unclutter. The latter could be used for a similar project, aiming to actually strip down non-essential content from web pages. See #29 for more info. |
For future reference, here are other combinations I considered: Names denoting actions (preferred because this is a bookmarklet to act on a page)
Names describing the effect (usable because this can be used as a base style)
Prefixes supporting multiple terminations (style, look, view, .css).
|
Note: "plain" and "basic" are actually very good choices for prefix, since (unlike "clean", "clear", "tidy" and "simple") they don't imply a subjective positive connotation, but merely describe the effect. "Raw" and "bare" would be good candidates but I'm afraid they may convey the notion of "no style at all" -- the same issue that plagues "unstyle". That said, they lack the punch of a more playful/memorable name, as well as the form of a verb/action, which better suits the bookmarklet use case. Which is why I'm sticking with "downstyle". |
rename project from Unstyle to Downstyle (closes #16)
I've been thinking about a subtle change from "downstyle" to "downstyler", to improve googlability (since "downstyle" is an existing term with prior meaning). Commit f7ca2fc provides a good template of what changes are needed for such a rename. |
To a less pretentious (and hopefully more self-explanatory) name than 'default.css'. How about 'raw-html.css'?
