Why $0 = shift @ARGV;

I am looking for an understanding of what this line in frontendlauncher is doing...

$0 = shift @ARGV;

To me, it appears to be a recursive invocation of frontendlauncher but with the three arg strings =, shift and @ARGV;.

Both the if and else above the line both result in an exec, which means that the line should never be reached.

We should remove the line.
