installation problem

during installation, the node_modules folder is not created when running "npm install", so the "gulp" command file(s) are not generated.

Aside the problem above - do in need to install / run anything from or into a specific folder? Do I needto updateany setting so the theme will actually be used?
Banging my head against the wall...
