A while ago, we discussed which license to use for TDWG content and it was decided to continue to use (but upgrade to 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

However, in our repositories such a license is missing. If agreed, I will add one for all repositories, with the copyright owner "Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG)".

We should also re-evaluate if we want to use CC-BY for all TDWG content or e.g. use CC0 for our standards, see tdwg/vocab#38

recommend something to exec from infrastructure

  • CC-BY for content
  • need something on GitHub, need to decide on that
  • get standards folks to agree
  • prepare statement for the website

Email discussion started with email from John Wieczorek on 2013-12-05 with topic "Request to change license for Darwin Core documentation to CC0"

So 4 things to do:

  • Decide which license(s) to use: CC-BY and/or CC0 (look also at email discussion)
  • Write text for (future) TDWG contributors that these licenses will be used for their content + put it on TDWG website
  • Write current TDWG contributors of standards that we plan to use this license on their content + ask approval
  • Add license to GitHub repositories.
