GOMOD

The GOMOD environment variable is used in Go to specify the path to the go.mod file for the current module. This variable is automatically set by Go when operating in module-aware mode, and it points to the go.mod file that defines the module's identity, dependencies, and version requirements.

Purpose of GOMOD

The GOMOD environment variable serves several purposes:

  1. Identifying the go.mod File:

    • The primary purpose of GOMOD is to specify the path to the go.mod file for the current module.
    • This allows Go tools and commands to locate and use the correct go.mod file when operating within a module.

  2. Module Resolution:

    • When Go commands (such as go build, go test, etc.) are executed within a module directory, they use the GOMOD variable to locate the relevant go.mod file.
    • This ensures that the correct module identity, dependencies, and version requirements are applied during build and test operations.

Behavior of GOMOD

  • Automatic Setting:

    • In module-aware mode (when GO111MODULE=on or auto), Go automatically sets the GOMOD variable to point to the go.mod file of the current module.
    • This variable is set internally by Go and does not typically require manual configuration.

  • Usage by Go Commands:

    • Go commands use the GOMOD variable to determine the context of the current module.
    • For example, when executing go build or go test, Go uses GOMOD to locate the relevant go.mod file and resolve dependencies accordingly.

Example

If you're working within a directory that is part of a Go module (i.e., contains a go.mod file), the GOMOD variable will automatically be set to the path of the go.mod file within that directory. For instance:

$ cd /path/to/my/module
$ go env GOMOD

The output will be the path to the go.mod file for the current module.
