Resizing the original

I know I came across this before, but I can't seem to find it. Is there a recommended way to resize the original file without it being a derivative? I don't want the original to take up so much space, but don't want to force the user to have to resize on their own. I searched for similar discussions, but unfortunately the only related discussion had no responses. Thanks.
