Web font CDN issues; very slow downloads (✓ resolved)

Currently investigating a severe performance degradation with the web font CDN, provided by Cloudflare. There have been several reports of up to 30 second load times of web fonts. If you are impacted, please comment with your geographical location (where you connect to the internet) and load times.

I have just disabled routing to Cloudflare and now instead routing all requests to GitHub's CDN. This might take up to an hour to propagate.

I think @KianNH has nailed it @rsms it looks like your domain has been throttled - you would have received an email with subject [Cloudflare]: Message regarding performance to explain that.

I am going to raise a ticket with you so we can fix this @ Cloudflare. Let's follow up there!

Indeed! Thank you. (I receive hundreds of emails everyday so I send all automated messages into separate inbox, thus I basically don't see automated emails.) Weird that Cloudflare did not show me any messages about this when I signed into their web admin interface.

Section 2.8 from their "Cloudflare Self-Serve Subscription Agreement":

2.8 Limitation on Serving Non-HTML Content
The Services are offered primarily as a platform to cache and serve web pages and websites. Unless explicitly included as part of a Paid Service purchased by you, you agree to use the Services solely for the purpose of (i) serving web pages as viewed through a web browser or other functionally equivalent applications, including rendering Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) or other functional equivalents, and (ii) serving web APIs subject to the restrictions set forth in this Section 2.8. Use of the Services for serving video or a disproportionate percentage of pictures, audio files, or other non-HTML content is prohibited, unless purchased separately as part of a Paid Service or expressly allowed under our Supplemental Terms for a specific Service. If we determine you have breached this Section 2.8, we may immediately suspend or restrict your use of the Services, or limit End User access to certain of your resources through the Services.

I believe I have (unintentionally) violated this part: "or other non-HTML content is prohibited".

Okay, well now I know that I can't use Cloudflare anymore! :–)
(Inter is only costing me money, not making me any, so I can't pay for a higher service level.)

👀 Fwiw, there is a version of Inter available via cdnjs which is run by Cloudflare: https://cdnjs.com/libraries/inter-ui (it's backed by an NPM distribution of inter: https://github.com/philipbelesky/inter-ui / http://npmjs.com/package/inter-ui)

These 3rd party packaged versions are often lagging behind and/or have missing features (like that Google Font publishes which is many years old and is missing italics.) Development of Inter moves pretty quickly (for being a typeface)

Cloudflare CTO here. As some of you know, we have tooling that protects our network and the quality of service for our users, but it improperly tagged your service as "violating our terms of service". Your site’s performance was improperly throttled and the throttle has been removed. This should never have happened and I am sorry it did.

The suggestion about showing information about this in the dashboard is a good one and I'll get the team to implement that.

We are implementing a permanent fix to prevent the problem that throttled your traffic incorrectly from ever happening again. You should not have been throttled and you should not have received an email telling you you'd broken out Terms of Service. I am sorry for the problems we caused you.
