; File: p3ECO.txt
; This file is based almost entirely upon the file ECOMast.txt that has
; been lovingly cared for and tended by Paul Onstad. Both Franz Hemmer
; and J.E.H.Shaw also contributed greatly to the original work. I have
; included Paul Onstad's introduction and notes below.
; --------------------------------------------------------------------
; Paul Onstad
; This line translation based upon a consolidated version by Franz Hemmer
; <franz@hemsoft.ping.dk> which was in coordinate notation.
;
; J.E.H.Shaw Ewart Shaw <strgh@mimosa.csv.warwick.ac.uk> created the
; original list which was the starting point for Hemmer.
;
; Opening descriptions are from many sources including "Unorthodox
; Openings" and "The Oxford Companion to Chess."
;
; Translation to standard algebraic and the addition of approximately
; 750 lines by Paul Onstad <ponstad@sihope.com>
; Notes, June 2001:
;
; Positions: 9281 Lines: 2717
;
; Previous additions were generally to resolve conflicts. In the past
; month, approximately 100 lines were added to detail modern lines that
; tended to fall short--even though the short position was represented
; by the proper ECO code.
;
; line codes:
; Volume A : C.A.
; Volume B : ECO 1997 ISBN 86 7297 032 2
; Volume C : ECO 1981
; Volume D : ECO 1998 ISBN 86 7297 040 3
; Volume E : ECO 1991 ISBN 86 7297 023 3
; Notes, May 2001:
;
; The "1/2" line terminators are a bit of an artifact but since I've used
; the asterisk for other purposes, they've been kept in lieu of *.
; Lines in this file can be displayed with chess reader, ChessU4.
; ECOClass uses this file to create its index for classifying PGN Games.
;
; There are two sections to this file. The second are lines that are
; seldom played, or lines that have been superceded by longer lines. Very
; few Games will ever match to a position in the second section.
;
; The arrangement is by ECO code with the basic line determining the ECO
; on top. These should always be straight "book" lines. Following are
; other book lines--either extensions or subvariations--usually in the
; collating order of the notation string where 'B' > 'b', etc..
; Following the book lines may be "natural" lines. These are transposed
; openings and quite often the most common move order. However, they are
; not in the ECO volumes except as represented by their positions. Natural
; lines are necessary for position matching. Were they omitted, many Games
; which transpose would find no match, by position, in this file.
;
; Anyone spending time with chess classification will soon discover that
; there is no certain, Systematic approach that will simply and
; consistently place each Game played in a particular "bin." Some Advanced
; positions hover between a half-dozen different codes--spanning nearly
; every ECO volume. C-Volume classifications are the simplest and most
; consistent while A-Volume codes hit the other extreme. I have numerous
; notes in this document, pointing out the difficult and the unusual.
;
;
; Additions I have made are marked "*pwo" -Paul Onstad
