The documentation says:

date=long

Use the long format with verbose ranges, for example:
1st January 2010

But, with biblatex 2024/03/21 v3.20, that's not what I get:

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[date=long]{biblatex}
\addbibresource{biblatex-examples.bib}
\begin{document}
\begin{itemize}
\item \citedate{shore}
\item \citedate{baez/online}
\end{itemize}
\printbibliography
\end{document}

I assume you want the months spelled out? That is controlled by the dateabbrev option.

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[date=long, dateabbrev=false]{biblatex}
\addbibresource{biblatex-examples.bib}
\begin{document}
\begin{itemize}
\item \citedate{shore}
\item \citedate{baez/online}
\end{itemize}
\printbibliography
\end{document}

Indeed.

That is controlled by the dateabbrev option.

Ah, OK: thanks! IMHO, the date=long documentation should be revised in this respect.

A small oversight in the docs. See 689ee36.

Thanks but not sure everyone who will look at the long value of date, will notice this “Note that [...]” (especially if it is on the following page).

Hm. I think we can expect users to read the complete bit of the documentation that deals with the relevant option. In particular the date format responds to many more settings than just dateabbrev. There is also datezeros, timezeros, seconds. I don't want to have to mention all of them in the explanation of the individual formats.
