So, this concert was more than 4 years ago and notably was pre-pandemic so I really don't remember much!

Okay: this really *isn't* a classical concert.
But I have an incredible fondness for Tchaikovsky's *Nutcracker*: it's such a cheery piece with all sorts of catchy themes stuffed inside, and every time I put it on it never fails to lift my mood.

Vengerov was a replacement for Martha Argerich.
Unfortunately Oxford Phil decided to play the Mendelssohn concerto, which they had played just a month ago, and one which is already (arguably) overperformed.

I don't really have much to say about this one!
I thoroughly enjoyed myself and while the highlight of the entire programme (for me) was the *Clarinet Quintet*, everything else was extremely well done.

Debussy's *Preludes* were the first piece which really made me sit down and compare lots and lots of interpretations to find one I liked the most.
I've also practised a couple of them, and in particular, I really love *Les collines d'Anacapri* (No. 5 from Book I).

I moved to London a few months ago and have been intending to use this opportunity to go for more classical concerts, so I turned up for this all-Brahms programme mostly on a whim.

Paul Lewis is generally considered one of the best Schubert interpreters—so I couldn't help but snap up tickets for this concert featuring Schubert's last three piano sonatas.
I must confess that although I have heard these sonatas many times, I have never actively listened enough to think about details of interpretation or structure.

Although I wasn't particularly thrilled by this programme, I decided to go, because why not?

[I've written about VOCES8 before!](/posts/2024-02-20-lost-birds)
After hearing them on Apple Music I went to look for their upcoming concerts, and was quite disappointed to find none in London... and then this Prom popped up, and I just _had_ to go for it, despite the 11am start (and the fact that the District line west of Earl's Court was shut!).

It's like this because I need to get it to sort lexicographically lower than Prom 3 so that it shows up 'later' in the list of posts.

Promming tickets sold out extremely quickly; I was lucky to be at the RAH in person the morning before to get physical tickets.
(Somehow, despite the Arena tickets being sold out online, the Box Office staff were still able to print out two tickets for me; this leads me to suspect that they reserve a certain number of tickets for in-person sales.

This is the second time this year I've heard Schubert's last three sonatas at Wigmore Hall; the last time was by [Paul Lewis](../../posts/2024-03-24-lewis-schubert).
I think there is some risk in listening to the same repertoire twice, because I inevitably start to compare the current performance against the previous one, and I get disappointed when something isn't executed in a way that I liked, etc.

Tonight's programme mainly consisted of transcriptions of various Bach pieces as well as Dukas's most famous piece, _The Sorcerer's Apprentice_.
Almost all of the transcriptions were written by Tharaud himself, and the programme notes made a point of emphasising that transcribing is in itself a form of artistry.

Michael Tilson Thomas's health condition is very well-known, so I won't go on about it in this post, except to mention that he seemed much more sprightly than the last time he conducted the LSO in Mahler 3 back in May.
