To effectively solve a problem, you need to understand what the underlying motivations, emotions, and issues a potential customer possesses.

We need to create a persona so everyone has alignment and context for the other activities in the design sprint (like the user journey).

Methods

We don't have user data, so we will begin with some light research of who accepts bitcoin (there are several bitcoin merchant directories), and talk with experts, and use surveys to get an understanding of current and potential users of bitcoin payment gateways.

Once this is done we will be able to assume some common archetypes, motivations, fears, and pain-points that we can form into a persona to align us in the sprint.

Below are some example questions we can try to answer:

Regarding Existing Merchants

Who
  1. What are the most common attributes for merchants who accept bitcoin?
  2. What problems do merchants commonly face with non-custodial payment gateways?
  3. What problems do merchants commonly face with custodial payment gateways?
  4. What is the time sensitive do their invoices need to be paid (see Problem / Underpaid Invoices #8)?
  5. How do those merchants handle refunds?

Regarding Potential Users

Survey
  1. What kinds of bitcoin payments would you like to make that you can't right now?
  2. Which kinds of merchants/shops would you personally like to see using BTC Pay Sever now?
  3. ...
