Argh status and roadmap

As you may have noticed, Argh is very much alive again after a long hiatus.

Huge thanks to all contributors who posted issues and pull requests!

Current state in a nutshell

I've examined all pending issues and pull requests, labeled them and assigned to milestones and incorporated some of them in releases which are already available on PyPI. I've also revamped everything related to packaging and CI so that the codebase is now modern and easy to maintain again.

The current roadmap was first drafted in #124 and already partially completed ahead of schedule. The pace will certainly fluctuate but it's expected that we'll have v.1.0 by the end of 2023.

The next big thing will be the support for typing.

What's next?

• 0.27 ✅ released 2023-02-09
  • drop support for Python 2.6
  • add support for Python 3.7—3.11
  • some enhancements and bugfixes

• 0.28 ✅ released 2023-02-15
  • a major modernisation and cleanup
  • drop support for Python 2.7, remove all the py2-compat code
  • strict linters, 100% test coverage, complete testing matrix
  • deprecate a whole bunch of stuff (to be removed in v.0.30)
    • most importantly, argument help as annotations — this paves the way to typing support in v.30+

• 0.29 — ETA Q2/Q3 2023
  • some bugfixes and enhancements
  • possibly some code reorganisation to keep the core simple, well-documented and thoroughly tested while offering additional capabilities (including the existing EntryPoint which does not necessarily belong to the core)
• 0.30 — ETA Q3/Q4 2023
  • remove the previously deprecated things
  • introduce Type hinting ("typing" module) #107 (design to be discussed). it is expected to reshape and significantly improve the amount of data that Argh infers from function signatures.
• 1.0 — ETA end of year 2023
  • stable and modern library

How can I help?

• please feel free to file issues and review existing pull requests.
• please don't hesitate to create pull requests, they will be reviewed much faster than before.
• most importantly, please join the discussions on issues that need design decisions, especially Type hinting ("typing" module) #107.
