The reason for
The receiver does not accept commands to control it when it is Off/Standby (except for the command to turn it On). I think having the different Just to be sure I put up a message in the developer support channel to clarify the state. Lets see what the response it there. I think the I would suggest to ask around in the Home Assistant Community forums or other platforms to see how other people work around this. |

I don't disagree about Off and Standby being synonymous for most uses, but it can be an important distinction that needs to be determined. As I said, Yamaha themselves refer to it as Standby and that is how it has always been referred to for devices like TVs that are powered, but essentially off and only able to receive the command to turn on. That is what Standby means and that is the case for both Yamaha AVRs and also the AppleTV (the latter not your problem I realise). Both are to all intents and purposes off and only available to be turned on remotely. That is what Standby means. I would add however that Yamaha AVRs can receive and enact more than just an On command when in Standby. You can switch inputs without having to fully turn it on. So that is Standby even by HA's definition.
When any device is powered, but doing nothing, as we say 'sleeping', that IS Standby mode. Off means it is actually unpowered, and although this would be indistinguishable from Unavailable', it is in fact exactly as HA have stated. So a Yamaha AVR, when turned 'off' by a remote command or indeed its button on the front, is in Standby, same as any device in this state of 'sleeping', same as for TVs since remote control was first introduced and for the AppleTV and all other devices. It is quite clear to me that ANY device (including Yamaha AVRs) when powered, but 'asleep', i.e. the normal mode when turned 'off' is and should be referenced as Standby. |

Since the integration is for Home Assistant the definition of the manufacturer is not really relevant. It is the Home Assistant definition that I should adhere to. It indeed turns out that the API command to change the source on the receiver actually works. I did not know that. All other commands like mute, volume, soundmode do not work when the receiver is in standby (same for many commands not related to media_player entity in Home Assistant). However I still think it matches the Home Assistant definition of Lets take a step back and lets have a look at the reason for your request. The consistency with Apple TV is not a strong argument because many other mediaplayers in Home Assistant use The other reason is to have a correct state when grouping mediaplayers. I assume you make a group of media_players through the Helpers menu in the Home Assistant settings. You did not mention what the current behavior is or what your expectations for the state of the grouped mediaplayer would be, so can't really help with that without knowing more. |

I cannot agree with your conclusion. Irrespective of my desire for consistency between Yamaha AVRs and AppleTVs, HA themselves state:-
By that definition, AppleTVs are currently correct, but Yamaha AVRs are unequivocally not. If Yamaha's definition was in some way unique, idiosyncratic and inconsistent with other devices, then I would agree their opinion would be irrelevant, but they are abiding by the exact definition of Standby, as used for ALL remote controlled devices and as defined by HA themselves. So Yamaha's position in this case supports the consistency I am requesting and hence is a relevant point. I would argue that what other integrations choose to use is in fact entirely irrelevant, since the majority are clearly wrong. This is not a consensus. HA have stated the (correct) interpretation and all integrations should obviously follow it. I'm not sure what the difficulty is in interpreting HA's definitions of Off and Standby. Off clearly means UNpowered and Standby is exactly as is understood by everyone to mean the device is actually powered, but simply awaiting a remote command to turn fully on. "Accepting commands" as HA put it, clearly does not mean fully operational. The situation has been somewhat confused by the colloquial use of 'Off' to mean putting a device into Standby mode. Everyone does it, I do it, but that doesn't change the fact that it really means Standby. Maybe you don't recall when TVs and audio systems simply had manual controls and no such thing as a remote. Back then, an Off button really did turn the device fully off. There was no other state. With the advent of the remote control, devices had to remain powered, but "in a low power state, accepting commands" in order to turn on. This state became known as Standby. That is, by definition, what that state is and that is the state of a Yamaha AVR when switched to a basically 'non functional' state by either a remote command or its physical button. That is Standby. Yamaha know that and so does HA. Where's the confusion with this? |

It seems we will not get an agreement here, so lets agree to disagree. I have been told that you might be able to use the Universal MediaPlayer integration to change the state to what you want, but I never used it myself. |

Well it's a shame you are unable to see the facts of this situation and I do not understand the reasons for your intransigence. When a Yamaha AVR is switched from On, by a remote command or its own button on the front panel, it is by all definitions, in Standby. Why you refuse to accept this is beyond me, but I will not try and correct you any further. Thanks for the link to the Universal MediaPlayer integration. I think that will be useful. |

I mainly use this for my Yamaha AVRs with AppleTVs as the source and there is a standout difference between their media_players' displayed state as when 'asleep', an AppleTV's state is Standby which make sense, but when a Yamaha AVR is similarly 'asleep', its state is shown as Off, yet even Yamaha specify that state as Standby.
Any chance this could be changed so a sleeping Yamaha would show as Standby and not Off?
Apart from the obvious better consistency between these 2 media_players, it should enable grouping them for common state display and control. Their current different use of state makes grouping them worthless.
I realise this could upset a lot of current automations etc, so could we not have an option to specify if we want a sleeping AVR to show as Off or Standby, with the former being the default? That way no-one has to change anything if they don't want to, but those who wish to take advantage of the different sleeping state can do so.
