Certain actions are getting stuck

I have started noticing this after upgrading to 1.96, running on macOS 15.2.

Observed the following:

• After using VSCode a while, git gets stuck
• In a Jupyter notebook, restarting a kernel gets stuck
• renaming a python file, and auto updating import statements gets stuck

In all cases the progress indicator keeps spinning (see screenshots).
If I use "Developer: Reload Window" from command palette I can get out of this state, things work for while, and then back to being stuck.
