When I click on the folder icon (which I assume is for selecting a directory) it either says something like "No app can open this file" or tries to open in an app but complains about "0" not being valid.

Running Lineage OS 15.1, (android version 8.1) on Fairphone 2.

Would be great if directory could be set in settings.

This is late but,
the folder icon is for opening the folder that the file is saved to and the problem with this is that there is no standard way of opening a directory in another application, so the method used to open it depends on the file explorer application you want to target, then also depends on the user also having that application, as most file explorers have different intents for this use, if they have one in the first place - Samsung's own file explorer for example, doesn't.

Selecting a directory I could do if the app was more up to date, but getting the app to work better on more recent APIs is more work than it's worth as I'm not even sure what compatibility the author wants for this app - as I tend to not work with older APIs and (rather selfishly) care little for compatibility.
