Currently git-assistant requires that the .git folder is at the root of your opened project in VS Code.
I planned a completely rewrite of the extension and this is one of the points I would like to address there.
But don't expect the feature soon.
In the mean time you should open a folder at the root of a git-project
I have found that git-assistant does run in my workspaces, but it does work if i am working from the root folder.
I was wondering if it is something that I am doing wrong?
