My name is Varsha Ahirwar and I am interested in the logging and error-catching tool project for InVesalius. I am currently a B.Tech IT undergraduate student from India and I have experience in Python, Machine learning, and CPP.
I am very interested in this project because it aligns perfectly with my interests and career goals. I am passionate about software development and I think this project would give me the opportunity to learn more about logging and error handling, while also contributing to the development of InVesalius.
I am proficient in Python which I believe would be useful for this project. However, I am eager to learn more and I would appreciate your guidance throughout the project.
You have provided a contribution guide in the 'GSoC 2023 - News' discussion section, that I am following to get started in this project,

I hope this message finds you doing well, during 'Compiling InVesalius' through command 'python setup.py build_ext --inplace' I am getting this error -

I am unable to find where am I lacking , I have followed all previous step as guided . I am looking for your guidance to overcome this error.

Go to start menu -> Visual Studio and (-> VC) -> x64 Native Tools Command Prompt or x64 Native Tools Command Prompt (depending on your architecture). Navigate to the InVesalius folder and run the command:

python setup.py build_ext --inplace

Thank you for your clear instructions, I could easily 'Compile InVesalius ' and Inside InVesalius source code directory ' InVesalius is running nicely.
As a next step, I am expected to load a sample image (DICOM images downloaded from https://invesalius.github.io/download.html) in InVesalius and record the video for the same. So I want to confirm that am I expected to import the folder(containing no of images) downloaded from https://invesalius.github.io/download.html and load that folder images and record the video of this?
Also, I want to ask as I am expected to upload the saved video file in the MP4 format in Google Drive, so am I supposed to provide this video link as proof to you? If yes, then how??

I have installed visual studio 2019, as you suggested that any PowerShell will work I tried it on the Anaconda powershell prompt but did not work, I think my Visual studio 2019 has some missing components, I am now trying to install visual studio 2022, will check after installation and let you know.

I compiled invesalius_cy to windows to python 3.8, 3.9, 3.10 and 3.11. I uploaded it here https://github.com/invesalius/invesalius3/releases/download/v3.1.99998/invesalius_cy.zip. I used github-ci to compile it. Just download it and copy the pyd to invesalius_cy inside InVesalius folder.

I have followed your instructions and copied the compiled PYD file to the invesalius_cy directory inside the InVesalius installation folder.

Are the compiled PYD files working for you? I suggest you to try to understand how to work with InVesalius as user. You have some videos here https://www.youtube.com/@invesalius/videos and here https://www.youtube.com/@bard-unila5501/videos (portuguese). Try to understand the basic:

I apologize for updating my progress this late.
@tfmoraes, thank you for your suggestions. Yes after adding the folder containing PYD files into the invesalius_py folder inside the Invesalius folder, I tested them and they are working as expected.
I have also watched some videos on the Invesalius YouTube channels and read up on the basics of DICOM, wxPython, and VTK. I have some experience with NumPy and the documentation provided by you, helps me to revise all of it.
While continuing to study these topics to deepen my understanding of Invesalius and technologies used in the software. I was deepening my understanding with the Project ‘Add logging and error catching tool’.
As this project is very straightforward and self-explanatory, I want to confirm my understanding of the project and my contribution to this project-

1. The main responsibility for this project is to add a graphical interface to Invesalius that allows the user to activate a tool for capturing logs and errors.
2. As described in ‘https://github.com/invesalius/gsoc/blob/main/gsoc_application.md’ after saving the video that captured the running Invesalius from its source code(I have already done this). The next step is to write a working code sample relevant to the project, for this project as much as I could understand, the following steps are expected to be done-
   (i) Creating a graphical interface using wxPython ( as Invesalius uses wxPython for its graphical interface).
   (ii) Then add functionality to the interface by connecting it to the logging module in python. (Suppose I have created a ‘Activate logging’ button and as the user clicks on this the tool should start capturing logs and errors. when the user clicks the ‘Save logs’ button the tool should save the sequence of events in a text file.

Is my understanding of the project right??

Yes, your understanding is correct. Just reinforcing that in addition to the GUI, it will be necessary to implement error catch and logs in the functions as well.
