Disk space usage 2.1.1 versus 2.4

I recently upgraded from 2.1.1 to 2.4.0. I notice a change in disk space usage behaviour since 2.4. 2.4 seems more greedy:

I do have a few buckets with unlimited retention but they tend to grow slow. The only high traffic bucket has a retention policy.

Is this disk space behaviour difference known?
