Mapping Unicode characters

How would we map something like this:
Alt{a} >> ā
When I put this in the conf file it tells me: Invalid key a in line 1 at Alt{a} so it doesn’t proceed, but also the conf file in ASCII, so how to map the unicode character?

This should work:
Alt{A} >> 'ā'
But only if your keyboard layout can type this character.
Just in case you are using Linux/Wayland: characters which require compose/dead keys are not yet implemented.

The problem for me with the solution is that I need to distinguish between capital and lower case letters, so that
Alt{a} >> 'ā'
and
Alt{A} >> 'Ā'
But the first line throws an error, as previously stated.

Typing of characters cannot automatically capitalize. This should work:

(Shift Alt){A} >> 'Ā'
Alt{A} >> 'ā'

Right, I can see how that would work. The problem now seems to be that the .conf file is in ASCII, not unicode, and when I change the encoding to UTF8 BOM it doesn’t like the BOM character at the beginning of the file, and when I change the encoding to UTF8 it doesn’t seem to work at all. Sorry about this.

Try creating a new file with UTF-8 encoding and copy paste the old config in section by section and see where it breaks. It's possibly some invisible character or something like that.
