Hello,

Despite my binary contains debug_info, Orbit complains about symbol loading.
What are the prerequisites I'm missing when building my binary to help Orbit loading the symbols?
Is the build id mandatory?
How may I include it in my binary?

Hmm, interesting. I still have no clue why Orbit is not even trying to load symbols for ut_sec (at least according to the log file).

But anyway. I'm glad that it works now. :-)

Hi qathy,
can you post the contents of the latest log file? You should be able to find it in $HOME/.orbitprofiler/logs.

Is the build id mandatory?

It is for some scenarios - like debuginfo stores (i.e. /usr/lib/debug). I'm not sure why you should get this error messages if the debug info is in the same binary. But the logfile should give us all the information to figure out what's going on.

How may I include it in my binary?

Most linkers (that is at least GNU ld, lld, gold) have an option --build-id. I thought it swichted on by default in all of those, but I might be mistaken. With readelf -SW /path/to/binary | grep .note.gnu.build-id you can also if a build is present in your program.

I had a look into the logs but it doesn't help me understanding what's going on.

That's indeed odd. I don't see it trying to load symbols for the main executable.

Or you running the process that you wanna profile in some kind of sandbox environment - like a Docker container?

Can you also post the memory map of your process (cat /proc/$PID/maps) I'm wondering if there is something weird going on their.

By the way, I worked around the issue re-building the binary on the same Ubuntu 22.04 system where Orbit is installed.
Hence, using g++ 11.
The original binary was built on an Ubuntu 20.04 using g++ 12 configured without build-id enabled.
