Is there a clean way to increase the sidebar (left menu) width?

Hi,

Without cloning the theme, is there a "clean" way to make the sidebar (left menu) use 4 columns instead of 3? I could use the extra space.

So far the only way I found is adding a baseof.html into my layout/docs side folder in order to make the changes.
