When I input the Japanese “ます” in ghostty, it is displayed as the symbol “〼”. Is there a way to fix this by changing the settings?

The issue occurred in an environment using the JetBrains Mono font on macOS.

This is my first time submitting to an issue tracker, so if there’s any missing information or anything unclear in my description, please let me know, and I’ll provide additional details.

I'm also using ghostty on macOS and could not confirm the same issue when I typed "ます".

But, I've previously typed "株式会社" and did not like the behavior of it being converted to the special character, so I turned off the ligature.

font-feature = -calt
font-feature = -liga
font-feature = -dlig

I'm unsure if this is the same issue, but to be safe, it might be worth taking a closer look!

I haven’t tested it in a Linux environment yet, so it might only be reproducible on Mac. Alternatively, it could be that font-feature = -dlig is specifically defined.

Same issue. ます does appear while highlighting the 〼 symbol though.

Actually, I just realized something - JetBrains Mono doesn't even cover CJK characters, so Ghostty must be using a fallback font that uses a bugged ます ligature by default. (This also explains why it returns to normal when the cursor hovers over it since cursors break all ligatures.)

Given that it only occurs on macOS so far, maybe it's one of Apple's system fonts that is not playing nicely here.

Could you all try to run something like ghostty +show-face --string "いただきます" and see which font is being used to render hiragana text? Additionally you can also add a fallback font yourself by covering the CJK codepoint range with a CJK font (see font-codepoint-map)

Can repro on Linux with the BIZ UDGothic font! Might then be broken font metadata

EDIT: Definitely a font ligature problem ­— turning off discretionary ligatures (font-features = -dlig) fixes the issue. I wonder then if there's anything to do on our side — Ghostty defaults to enabling ligatures but we didn't expect that to make a common string like ます to appear completely broken. I'll discuss with the other developers.
