autoupdate would probably require some effort to standardise the packaging across platforms a bit first

but it would be really easy to check the GitHub API for new releases on startup and pop up a message box if there is a new one

I think a popup could be annoying, just a lil message in the status bar would be good?

0.7.3 adds a check for whether there is a new version available. Obviously this isn't going to kick-in until we release 0.7.4 though
