DreamConn connection isn't made on first execution

I was looking at this line. The DreamConn connection isn't allowed to proceed on first execution because the config is not written yet. I'm wondering if there is a way to instead automatically enumerate in this case. Can someone please help point me in the right direction?

If there's no config file then the maple port won't be forced here but it is set to a default (the SDL joystick index) when the gamepad is created here.
