I'll add more details as to what the symptoms are.

The WeChat service fails to start, reporting an error like this:

ERR Failed to connect to homeserver, retrying in 10 seconds... error="failed to GET /_matrix/client/versions: M_FORBIDDEN (HTTP 403): Application service has not registered this user (@wechatbot:example.com)"
