This subproject concerns the possible replacement, upgrade and/or further development of satni.org.
Satni.org is a portal for publishing and presenting electronic dictionaries and terminology for the Sámi languages. It differs from other web dictionaries provided by the Divvun and Giellatekno groups in the following ways:
- it includes the content of the Sámi TermWiki (i.e. terminology)
- it presents all dictionaries for all language pairs in one unified interface
- all dictionary entries for a given word or search term is displayed at the same time, with a header separating and identifying each dictionary or term collection
- satni.org is developed in cooperation with the Norwegian Sámi Parliament and Giellagáldu (other dictionary interfaces are developed independently at UiT)
All dictionaries and term collections are stored in a common XML format.
The present solution is using the eXist indexed XML database as a backend, and a Javascript web app as a front end. The present code for the whole system is available in our svn repository.
The following areas should be addressed by the tender:
- stability - uptime at least 99,9% (= max 3m36sec downtime each 24h)
- speed - query response time below 0.5 sec in 99% of the queries
- responsiveness of web UI
- adaption to use on mobile devices & different screen sizes
- integration with other services via the REST/ GraphQL API, including at least:
- paradigm generation (new)
- speech synthesis (new)
- corpus searches (existing)
- should use the REST/GraphQL interface for searching and looking up dictionary content
More specifically, the web app should be developed as a modern web app adhering to the following:
- reactive patterns
- responsive design, mobile first
- browser compatibility: all modern browsers plus IE11
- one single webapp for all browser and platforms
Whether to replace or keep the present backend is up to the tenderer. Preferably both alternatives should be presented, with a price tag for each.
As the Norwegian Sámi Parliament is a stakeholder in the project, they should also be involved in the development project via regular meetings and discussions related to functionality and user interface. The Divvun group is responsible for organising such meetings, and to ensure appropriate communication between the tender winner and the Sámi Parliament.
The new implementation should provide the following existing functionality:
- turning on/off specific dictionaries or term collections
- search for a specified string (or substring from the beginning of a word) in the selected dictionaries and term collections, or in all of them at once
- automatic display of the dictionary article(s)/term entry/ies for the first hit
- link to an autogenerated Korp search for all relevant languages (=languages in Korp)
- localised interface and URL
- option to change interface language
- ability to filter termwiki entries by collection, so that one can see all and only the terms related to a specific collection
- ability to download a selection of entries (collection or search results) in a standardised xml format; it should even be possible to download whole dictionaries
- paradigm generation for a given word by clicking on that word or a symbol nearby
- speech synthesis for North Sámi entries (later also for other languages) by clicking on a symbol close to the entry
- browser compatibility: all modern browsers plus IE11
Part of the project is to develop an MS Office web plugin that allows searching and looking up dictionary entries and translations from within MS Office. See this Bugzilla entry for some more details. The plugin should use the same REST/GraphQL interface as the stand-alone web app.
Before delivery of the final version, the code should meet the standard requirements, plus the following:
- web app accepted by the Norwegian Sámi Parliament
- web app according to targets and specifications in this document
