ios and android appium config

Hi - I know from reading the docs that one can create tests cases that will execute against both iOS and Android, but it's not clear from the docs how one would setup conf in order to do so. Specifically, the Appium helper seems to accept either an android app OR an iOS app, but not both. Is there a way to configure the appium helper to be able to target both Android and iOS native apps?
