disable subcommand hinting?

I have a situation where I have a command with optional subcommands and an optional positional argument. If I type an argument that is too close to one of the optional subcommands, I get an error. For example, I have a subcommand named read. If i type:

foo red

I get

error: The subcommand 'red' wasn't recognized
           Did you mean 'read'?

I don't want this behavior. I want the positional argument to get filled out. Mind you this all works if the provided input is not one off from a named subcommand. Can this normally helpful hinting be turned off?
