Move all network calls to use async/await instead of Combine

At the project's inception (2020) the network layer was built primarily with Combine. This introduced some side effects and makes 'typing' more cumbersome then it has to be. Some requests are now (1.4.1) already done with async/await, time to move the rest over too!
