spotify-snapshot

Easily snapshot (and schedule repeated snapshots of) the state of your Spotify library / playlists / etc, and store it in version control.

Why?

The main motivation for building this tooling is to have a backup of your music library in case Spotify ever disappears or has a mass dataloss event. You can also track your Spotify world as it evolves over time (and use git tooling to analyze it), but that's secondary.

Warning

This tool is uses the Spotify API and spotipy inherits their limitations. For example, it can not access "Spotify Wrapped" playlists, or playlists generated for you by Spotify.

Quickstart

$ git clone git@github.com:alichtman/spotify-snapshot.git
$ cd spotify-snapshot
$ pipx install .
$ spotify_snapshot

Configuration

Spotify API Setup

In order to use this tool, you'll need to set up a Spotify developer app and copy the client ID and client secret to your environment.

1. Create a Spotify app at https://developer.spotify.com/dashboard/applications
2. Set the callback URL to http://127.0.0.1:8000/callback
3. Select the "Web API" checkbox
4. Copy the client ID and client secret
5. Run spotify_snapshot and follow the prompts to save them to your system keyring. I used the system keyring because environment variables aren't passed into the cronjob execution context by default. We can't specify the secret in the config file because we want to be able to back up the dotfiles publicly (with something like shallow-backup) without exposing secrets.

Configuration File

The tool uses a TOML configuration file located at $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/spotify-snapshot.toml (typically ~/.config/spotify-snapshot.toml). On first run, you'll be guided through a flow to create this file.

Note that most paths do not accept environment variables (because they aren't passed into the cronjob execution context by default), so you'll need to set them manually.

You can set up automatic backups that run every x hours using the built-in cronjob integration:
