Description

PalMA to Go is a way to use PalMA from a USB stick, so you can take it wherever you want.

Installation

In order to use PalMA to Go you'll need to install Portable Virtual Box on a USB drive with at least 8 GB storage.

Next you need to create an image of a Linux machine (we recommend Debian) and install PalMA on it just as you would on a real machine. However, instead of the normal palma.service, you would need to copy palma2go.service to /etc/systemd/system.

As another difference you also do not need to configure your own palma.ini, because it is generated from examples/p2g.ini and automatically inserts the stations' IP address. You can however customize theme, name and so on by editing p2g.ini.

Please make sure that all the scripts for PalMA and PalMA to Go can be executed and have the right owner: chmod +x /var/www/html/scripts/* chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/

In order to be able to display the virtual PalMA machine in fullscreen you need to install virtualbox guest additions.

Requirements for Usage

To start PalMA 2 Go you will need administrator privileges on the machine the USB is plugged in to.

Your computer must be connected to the internet. The virtual machine (guest) needs to use the network adapters of your computer (host). To enable this please allow Portable VirtualBox to install the respective Oracle modules at startup, if they are not already available on the host. They will automatically be removed from your machine after usage.

You might be prompted to change the network adapter for the virtual machine. Please do so, leave the selected default choice. and click "OK" to proceed. After this the guest reconfigures itself during boot according to your host system. This may take a minute or two. Then you can enjoy your portable PalMA station.

When exiting Portable VirtualBox, please wait for it to close and uninstall said network modules. We recommend to eject the USB drive before unplugging it. Please do not unplug the usb drive while virtual machines are running!

Usage

PalMA to Go can be used just like a normal PalMA installation. However, users can only connect via IP address. PIN and IP are available in the help section of PalMA.

Also the desktop sharing is little bit different to a normal PalMA, since a preconfigured VNC software cannot be provided. To share your desktop you will need to download, install und setup a VNC software. The installer files can be downloaded from PalMA.

Desktop sharing on Windows

Launch the downloaded file, under "Select Components" choose "UlraVNC Server Only" and finish the installation. Start "UltraVNC Server" from your Windows programs. In the lower right corner (systray) an icon with an eye appears. Right click in the icon, choose "Add New Client" and fill the field "host" with the IP adress of the PalMA station. Now your desktop is displayed on PalMA.

Desktop sharing on MAC

Launch the downloaded file with "CTRL + click" and allow it to be executed. A second, hidden window opens in which you can start Vine Server. Click on "VNC Server" in the upper left corner, select "Reverse Connection", fill in the IP of the PalMA station and connect. Now your desktop is displayed on PalMA.
