Adding Templates to cover a map

Is there a simple way to create a set of templates that cover the screen with minimal overlap?
I have found it difficult to create a set of templates that completely cover a map. Out in the field it is frustrating to draw and have my drawing suddenly disappear when I lift the stylis off the screen When I haphazardly add templates in the field I have a whole jumble of overlapping templates such that it is difficult to choose the correct one.
As a workaround I have made a paper cover that shows where the template will be created so I can move the map and create a set of templates that cover the map before I go into the field. Hopefully there is a better way to control template creation.
