What does this offer on top of Pycharm?

Reading the docs, it's not immediately clear to me why I might want to use this - it seems like it offers similar things to what already exists. Presumably the selling point is that it's backed by the Pyright Microsoft engine? What functionality does this add on top of native Pycharm?

This would better help me decide if I should give it a go.

Hopefully this sprint come across as entitled- that's really not my goal.

I'm going to be honest with you: This plugin is intended to be used by people who know they want it.

• If you have never used Pyright to type check your code, you likely don't need it.
• If you never used/enjoyed the Python and/or Pylance VSCode extensions, you likely don't need it.
• If you have come to Python for its dynamic and duck typing characteristics and you would prefer using a statically typed language by design to adding a lot of type hints to Python, you likely don't want it.
• If you can't stand being reminded that re.search() may return None when you access the result's .group() even when you are 120% sure there will always be a match, you likely don't want it.

On top of all of that, the API this plugin depends on is experimental and limited in many ways. See #29 for a quick taste.

By the way, to address the "selling point" part, this plugin is not backed by Microsoft's Pyright, but by Pyright.

Pyright itself is open source. The proprietary parts (extra language server capabilities, Pytest support, semantic highlighting, etc.) are included in Pylance, which is only licensed to be used in official Microsoft products (e.g. VSCode, but not VSCodium). There are also forks (e.g. @DetachHead/basedpyright) not under Microsoft's control, and neither is this plugin.
