ENVO:00000057 mangrove swamp A swamp which is located in tropical or subtropical environments and is determined by communities of trees and shrubs growing saline coastal environments.
ENVO:00000189 peat swamp Forested peatlands including both rain- and groundwater-fed types, commonly recorded in tropical regions with high rainfall.
ENVO:00000233 swamp ecosystem A wetland ecosystem in which land mass is permanently inundated by shallow bodies of water, generally with a substantial number of hummocks, or dry-land protrusions.
ENVO:01000327 strand swamp A strand swamp is a swamp that forms linear drainage channels on flatlands.
ENVO:01000328 dome swamp A dome swamp is a swamp which occurs in a depression where deeper waters at the centre of the swamp allow trees to grow taller relative to those in shallower regions of the depression. This creates a dome-like shape.
ENVO:01000330 cypress strand swamp A cypress strand swamp is a strand swamp which has a plant community dominated by Cupressaceae, often swamp cypresses. Swamp cypresses typically belong to the genus Taxodium or the species Glyptostrobus pensilis and Actinostrobus pyramidalis.
ENVO:01000331 cypress swamp A cypress swamp is a swamp which has a plant community dominated by Cupressaceae, often swamp cypresses. Swamp cypresses typically belong to the genus Taxodium or the species Glyptostrobus pensilis and Actinostrobus pyramidalis.
ENVO:01000394 tropical freshwater swamp forest A freshwater swamp forest which is subject to tropical climate patterns.
ENVO:01000398 temperate freshwater swamp forest A freshwater swamp forest which is subject to temperate climate patterns.
ENVO:01000432 swamp forest None

general observations

  • we are lacking a general concept of swamp that encompasses all these different types of swamps
  • it's not clear why some labels have "ecosystem" affixed whereas others don't. As these are all classified under ecosystem they are all presumably ecosystems. See Create design patterns for biome and ecosystem #1209

specific comments:

  • should "swamp forest" not be classified under "swamp ecosystem". The former is already classified under ecosystem.
  • same for "peat swamp"
  • same for "mangrove swamp"

I think that it may be worthwhile to have a comprehensive re-evaluation and maybe re-normalization of ecosystem types in ENVO. Lots of related issues (e.g. #1553 #1579). I added a label for ecosystem classification.
