This repository contains a LaTeX template for Colorado State University theses and dissertations. Note that this repository is not the official Colorado State University Thesis/Dissertation LaTeX Template. However, this unofficial LaTeX document class for the Colorado State University Thesis/Dissertation automates generation of some of the preliminary pages (e.g., copyright page) and offers additional flexibility.
Where the formatting guidelines allows, this template defaults to formatting used
in publications by the American Meteorological Society.
Specifically, the AMS reference and citation format style is used.
ametsoc_csu
in the \bibliographystyle{}
command can be swapped for any
user specified .bst
file if a different reference and in-text citation format
is preferred.
- master - including 'masters' will change 'Doctor of Philosophy' to 'Master of Science' for the degree
- 10pt, 11pt, 12pt - CSU allows the font size of the main text to be within 10-12 pts. The font for the entire manuscript will be set to this value save the page number and footnotes.
- times - Adobe Systems Utopia (1989) is the default serif font. The
times
optional argument will load thenewtxtext
andnewtxmath
packages. - blue -
hyperref
is automatically imported, but all urls and references are displayed in black.blue
makes the text for urls and references blue rather than black (assumes that hyperref is used) - smallfoot - makes the page number
\scriptsize
rather than\footnotesize
- nocopyright - CSU now requires the copyright page. If the style changes back, nocopyright restores older CSU format
No guarantees are made that the template complies to current university style guidelines.
Below is example LaTeX using the template. This example is similar to what is in the ./csu_thesis_and_dissertation_template.tex
file.

To include published work in your thesis/dissertation, the Graduate School say that "any references to journal publications, authors, etc. on your chapter pages or major heading pages should be listed as a footnote." These footnotes must be numbered.
To avoid having the footnote mark appearing in the Table of Contents, you need to trick LaTeX (there might be a better options, but this is the best solution I have found).
- create the new command with your chapter title before
\begin{document}
\newcommand{\mytitle}{Awesome chapter title}
- replace your chapter title with the following LaTeX.
- Change
\mytitle
to the value used in 1) - In
\ref
, create a unique label - Set the
\addtocounter
value manually - Change the
\label
in\footnotetext
to the same value as\ref
- Add your text to the
\footnotetext
. Note,\citet
and\citep
may or may not work for you so you might just have to type the reference
\chapter[\mytitle]{% \for{toc}{\mytitle}\except{toc}{\mytitle\textsuperscript{\ref{foot:mytitle}}}% } \addtocounter{footnote}{1} \footnotetext{\label{foot:mytitle}This chapter contains material from \protect\citet{}.}
- Change
