Major revision of EAG2012
The Working Group on Standards (WGoS) at Archives Portal Europe Foundation has initiated the major revision of EAG2012, the Encoded Archival Guide to capture structured data on institutions with archival holdings. While all current issues being discussed in the context of this revision can be found in a list view here on GitHub, this current page means to provide a more general overview and some orientation with regard to:
- different sections of EAG2012;
- groups of elements of the same type, e.g. all elements for encoding names or all elements for encoding identifiers;
- specific types of intended changes, e.g. with regard to including references or links to other resources;
- etc.
An initial call for comments was shared with deadline of 27 March 2020, though the WGoS continues taking in comments and feedback from the community. We would want to encourage feedback and comments being sent via GitHub as a central place to collect, review and follow up on potential future changes. Alternatively, you can address the WGoS via email (standards@archivesportaleurope.net) and we will then include your feedback and comments on GitHub accordingly.
Following up on
- the major revision of EAC-CPF, the Encoded Archival Context - Corporate Bodies, Person, and Families, conducted by the Technical Subcommittee on Encoded Archival Standards;
- the expected consultation of the most recent drafts of the Records in Contexts Conceptual Model and Ontology; the revision of EAG2012 will kick off during the second half of 2020, aiming at the publication of an initial draft within a year's time from then.
EAG2012 goes along with the International Standard for Describing Institutions with Archival Holdings (ISDIAH) published by the International Council on Archives. In addition to the (technical) schema in XSD as well as RNC and RNG formats, there is a Tag Library available online with descriptions, examples of use and examples of encoding for all current EAG2012 elements.
